The painting “Victoria” – meaning victory – depicts a naked, mature woman trapped in a dark, damp cellar. Her body seems to merge with the stone steps that lead upward, as if she were part of the very space that surrounds and confines her.
A scarf rests on her head, partially covering her face – a face almost completely hidden in shadow, wrapped in cobwebs. This is an image of time standing still, a symbol of oblivion, loneliness, perhaps a long-unresolved trauma. The woman appears motionless, weary, yet undefeated. Her posture is filled with tension – one hand raised toward the sky in a gesture of hope or awakening, while the other lowers, as if slowly fading, dematerializing, surrendering something that no longer belongs to the present.
Despite the surrounding darkness, stone steps are visible in front of her, leading upward – toward the light and a new beginning. These stairs become the central symbol of the painting. They embody a difficult yet possible path to renewal. A metaphor for inner transformation and strength, born not in spite of suffering, but through it.
Each of us may one day find ourselves in a dark place. We may feel alone, forgotten, hurt. But this painting tells us that even then, a way out exists. Sometimes, we only need to look up – at the stairs that lead to the light. Victoria is not just a victory over the world, but above all, a triumph over oneself.
